Sustainability | November 19th, 2008 by Caroline Shannon | Comments | Leave a comment

When we think of health, our body comes to mind – fitness, mind-body connection, taking your vitamins, avoiding a heat attack and so forth.

But what about the environment by which you are surrounded? It’s true, a healthy you is important, but to achieve complete well-being you must also consider the way you are living – literally. Yes, that’s right: Your home sweet home must also get a routine physical.

In her book, Super Cleanse: Detox Your Body for Long-Lasting Health and Beauty, author Adina Niemerow discusses a number of cleansing options to fine-tune your body. But she also shares with readers a plan for total home rejuvenation with a “detox” called “There’s No Place Like Home.”

Sustainability | November 11th, 2008 by Carrie and Danielle staff | Comments | Leave a comment

In this time of awareness about beauty products and food, what we put on our skin and in our mouths can have a dramatic impact on our body, mind, and spirit.

In Need of Some Alone Time?

The perfect escape begins with a bath, only Don’t fill it to the rim. Instead sink deep into warm natural bubbles, and emerge refreshed, relaxed, and silky smooth, without sulfates, parabens or preservatives.

In Need of Extra REM?

Ah, the adventure of bus travel, the call of the open road! Jump into the “real” American landscape and culture, save money and minimize climate change.

But come to think of it, why do I need to justify bus travel at all; shouldn’t we have to justify the excess waste of flying? But I accept that I’ve chosen to go against the status quo, so here’s why I’m enjoying the ride:

Bribing Mother Nature: The Danger of Carbon Offsetting

Sustainability | October 27th, 2008 by Rick Juliusson | Comments | Leave a comment

Carbon offsetting is a well-intentioned movement to compensate for the environmental damage of our daily lives. But instead it allows us to just keep on making that damage.

In the middle ages, the Roman Catholic Church’s ability to grant ‘indulgences’—a pardon for sins in exchange for good works and prayers —had predictably given way to pardons in exchange for donations to the church. The bigger the sin, the bigger the required donation to put things right with God. What a perfect closed-loop system, I’ve always thought, to allow sinners to keep on sinning and the church to raise money and profile.

Eek-o-Friendly: Make this Halloween Green

Sustainability | October 24th, 2008 by Carrie and Danielle staff | Comments | Leave a comment

When you think about Halloween, green does not necessarily jump to mind. It’s more like loads and loads and loads of candy suddenly appearing on table tops one and all. Whether you spot them in your office, in your pantry, or ultimately in your body, it’s little we can do to escape the candy coated invitation.

As for decorating, we haven’t strayed much from the old standards of orange and black streamers and plastic spooky arachnids in every shape, size and color. And let’s not forget the array of polyester costumes that surely should have a warning sticker reminding you not to stand too near an open flame [actually, most of them are sprayed with fire retardants]. You may be the chosen one to decorate your office or cubicle or the brave soul throwing a spook-tacular bash for your friends.
